                      | Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Sister City Relationship between Guangzhou and Vancouver
Vancouver twinned with Guangzhou, the capital of
                        China¡¦s most-populous province Guangdong in
1985. Guangdong is the ancestral home to many
British Columbians of Chinese descent and known
as the manufacturing and high-tech heartland of
                        China.
On Friday, April 18, 2025, the Consulate General
of the People's Republic of China in Vancouver
hosted a reception celebrating the 40th
anniversary of the Sister City relationship
                        between Guangzhou and Vancouver.
Bill Yee, Chairman of the Yee Fung Toy Society
of Canada, a retired B.C. Provincial Court
judge, he was the first Chinese Canadian elected
to Vancouver city council in 1982 and he
remained at 12th and Cambie until 1986. The
                        honorary citizen of Guangzhou, Vancouver¡¦s
Chinese sister city, also served on the
Vancouver Police Board (1992 to 1997) and BC
Hydro board (1997 to 1999). Bill was invited to
                        attend the 40th anniversary celebration.
During the event, Chairman Bill Yee was asked to
make a speech, in his speech, he recalled that
during his tenure as a city Councillor, he
                        actively traveled between Guangzhou and
Vancouver, and after two years of hard work, he
finally facilitated the signing of a sister city
agreement on March 27, 1985, between the then
mayor of Guangzhou, Yip Xuanping, and the mayor
of Vancouver, Mike Harcourt. Since then,
                        Vancouver has become Guangzhou's second
international sister city in North America.
William Ma, President of the Vancouver-Guangzhou
                        Friendship Association, said that the
association is actively planning to organize a
delegation of overseas Chinese, business and
municipal government in Greater Vancouver to
visit Guangzhou this autumn to conduct cultural
and commercial exchanges and deepen the friendly
relations between the two sister cities.

Dumpling (Zongzi) Workshop! On Saturday, May 24,
2025, our enthusiastic registrants arrived early
and gathered at the Society kitchen area. Guests
were first treated to a brief history background
of the origins of the rice dumpling followed by
                        a dumpling making demo.
Participants were asked to wash their hands
first, then gathered around the ingredients
table that allowed each participant to try their
                        hand at dumpling making.
The event ended with everyone sampling homemade
zongzi and some tea, grapes, mandarins,
watermelon and sweet pastries. Participants also
took home a few zongzi that they made. Workshop
teachers were thrilled to be able to share their
                        skills to the participants!
We also received positive feedback from
participants, many who indicated that they hoped
there would be more cultural food workshops
hosted in future. It was a great Yee building
activity that brought longstanding members and
newcomers together. Thanks to all who helped

                      | 2025 Moon Cake Workshop
As the Mid-Autumn Festival approached, The Yee
Fung Toy Society of Vancouver specially held a
unique 'Moon Cake Making Workshop' on Friday,
October 3rd, allowing clan members and friends
to gather and personally experience the rich
                        atmosphere of this traditional festival.
This workshop was carefully organized and
personally guided by Director Crystal Addison,
with fourteen clan members and friends
                        enthusiastically participating. The atmosphere
on-site was relaxed and cheerful, with everyone
learning while sharing the joy of the festival.
Crystal specially prepared a 'beautiful and
easy-to-make' mini moon cake recipe, including
the dough, fillings, and all the materials
                        needed for preparation.
Crystal demonstrated the making process in a
delicate and lively manner¡Xexplaining each step
by step clearly, from kneading the dough, then
take one dough section, roll into a ball, then
flatten with one¡¦s hand until the dough is very
thin. Take filling, make into a ball and put in
the center of the dough. Wrap dough around the
filling until it is a thin layer covering the
entire filling, and seal dough around filling,
to pressing the product on the mold.
Before getting started, she first asked everyone
to wash their hands and put on gloves, then
focus intently on observing her demonstration.
Afterwards, the participants eagerly tried it
themselves, starting cautiously at first and
gradually becoming more skilled. Each person
immersed themselves in the activity, feeling a
great sense of accomplishment. The mini moon
cakes molded into shape looked like delicate
little pieces of art, so charming that one
                        couldn't help but admire them.
It is worth mentioning that besides the
enthusiastic ladies, there were also several
                        gentlemen participating on-site, including a
retired civil engineer named Larry. He applied
the professional spirit and meticulous attitude
of an engineer, calculating and controlling the
mold angles and pressure, earnestly "designing"
a batch of mini moon cakes with perfect shapes
                        and precise proportions, astonishing everyone
present and adding a lot of fun and highlights
                        to the event.
Finally, when the moon cakes are baked, the
aroma fills the air, and everyone happily
admires and tastes their own creations. This is
not just a baking activity, but a warm gathering
that strengthens family bonds and passes on
                        Chinese culture.
We sincerely thank Crystal for her meticulous
guidance and thoughtful arrangements, which made
this workshop an unforgettable and wonderful
memory on the eve of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
