Edmonton YFT and Athletic Club Autumn Trip to the Park and Zoo

As the crisp autumn breeze rustles through the golden leaves and the days grow shorter, there is no better time to embark on a journey into the heart of nature. In Edmonton, two exceptional destinations await those seeking to connect with the beauty of the season ¡V Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park and the Edmonton Valley Zoo. An immersive autumn trip to these two magnificent locations, where you can experience the harmony of nature and the wonder of wildlife, all while surrounded by the enchanting colors of fall.

We, 40 of us seniors, boarded the rented school bus made the trip on a sunny September day, bought with us Vietnamese subs for lunch. Everyone experienced a fiery palette of reds, oranges, and yellows, creating a vivid contrast against the deep blue river waters. Strolling along the park's winding trails, we were captivated by the crunch of fallen leaves underfoot and the soft, earthy aroma that fills the air.

A short drive from Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park, the Edmonton Valley Zoo offers a unique opportunity to experience autumn from a different perspective ¡V through the eyes of the animal kingdom. This zoo, nestled within the lush greenery of the river valley, becomes even more enchanting during the fall season. Upon arriving, everyone scattered and witnessed the amazing animals, the peaceful setting of the park.

An autumn trip to Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park and the Edmonton Valley Zoo was an unforgettable experience, we marveled at the wonders of nature and observe the fascinating behaviors of wildlife in the crisp, cool air of the season. We finished the day with a sumptuous meal at the All Family Restaurant.

DYFTFA Visit to the "Detroit Chinatown" Exhibit

On October 6, 2023, members of the Detroit Yee Fung Toy Family Association attended the preview of a new ¡§Detroit Chinatown¡¨ exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum. Over 100 years ago, Yee family members immigrated to the Detroit, Michigan area in search of jobs and fortune in the ¡§Golden Mountain¡¨ of the United States.

Like all minorities, the Chinese in America established enclaves which became Chinatowns. This exhibit shows the ¡§Two Chinatowns¡¨ of Detroit. Although ¡§Detroit Chinatown¡¨ has disappeared due to Urban Renewal in the 1960¡¦s, and the current revitalization of Downtown Detroit, the spirit of the early Chinese immigrants endures.

Contributing to this exhibit were Yee Fung Toy members, Ron Yee, Dick Yee, and Allan Yee. Also contributing was the family of Grand Elder, Kin Hoy "Kimmie" Yee.

Many thanks to Lily Chen, the Detroit Chinatowns Exhibit curator.

DYFTFA Fall Outing at Upland Hills Farm

On Sunday, October 8th, the day started off cold and cloudy, but by the time our annual Autumn Fun Fest started, it was partly sunny and in the mid 50¡¦s. Another beautiful autumn day in the State of Michigan. We had over 50 DYFTFA members and friends attend our annual celebration of the Autumn Moon.

We started with fresh donuts and Apple Cider. And later all attendees feasted on a delicious lunch consisting of 3 types of pizza, pasta, two types salads and our famous ¡§Uncle Ray¡¦s Pulled Pork¡¨. Activities included a Magic Show, Farm Demonstrations, Pony Rides, a Hayrides and interaction with farm animals. Included this year was a free raffle for pumpkins and delicious ¡§double yolk¡¨ Moon Cake Tins.

A great time was had by all attendees!

NE YFT General Nomination Meeting and Thanksgiving Celebration

YFT New England held their General Nomination meeting this past Sunday November 12, followed by a very successful Thanksgiving celebration.

Many members attended the meeting, provided their input and nominations, followed by a festive Thanksgiving feast. Many of the food were made by our own members.

President Paula made a delicious ham and mushroom dish and coconut custard pies. Kathy (Mrs. Winston Yee) made her famous sweet potato dish. Mrs. Ho Lee Yee made her mashed potatoes. Mrs. Warren Yee made a tapioca dessert. Karin made brownies and banana bread. And last but not least, the entire Women's Group helped to make two delicious vegetable dishes. Several volunteers carved the turkeys. Nothing went to waste as the Women's Group saved all the turkey carcasses and ham bones to make a delicious rice porridge. No one left the association hungry!

DYFTFA Family Event at the Detroit Historical Museum

The Detroit Yee Fung Toy Family Association recently hosted a special educational event for 60 members at the Detroit Historical Museum, ¡§The Detroit Chinatowns¡¨. In the early 1900¡¦s, many Yee family members immigrated to the City of Detroit, Michigan in search of the ¡§Golden Mountain¡¨. Like many other minorities, the Chinese in Detroit created their own ¡§Chinatown¡¨ which was a vibrant community that promoted businesses, culture and education.

Since many Yee family members were instrumental in the creation and success of the ¡§Detroit Chinatowns¡¨, many DYFTFA members (the family of Kin Hoy Yee, Cathie, Ed and Brian; Ron Yee, Dick Yee, Allan Yee, and Kathy Yee¡¦s family) were major contributors to this fantastic educational exhibit.

Lily Chen, the Detroit Chinatown curator provided our members with a personal tour of the exhibit and insight on how this exhibit was created. Later, we had a delicious luncheon, a fellowship hour to reminisce with friends and family, and a free raffle of door prizes for all attendees. A great time was had by all.

And in recognition of Lily Chen¡¦s hard work to bring this exhibition to fruition, the DYFTFA gave a donation to the Detroit Historical Society¡¦s 100 Year Anniversary Fund.

YFT NE Chapter Installation of 2024 Officers

The YFT NE Chapter installed their 2024 officers on December 3, 2023. As practiced in previous years, we also celebrated winter solstice same day with huge pots of tong-yun made by our own Women's Group.

It's well known and uncontested throughout the Chinatown community that our YFT members make the most delicious tong-yun. Because of that news, some community VIP friends stopped by to try some delicious tong-yun and were pleasantly surprised to find out it was also our installation day.
