Vancouver celebrates Ching Ming

Our ancestors describe the Ching Ming Festival like this: ¡§With the coming of Spring, nature wakes up, dressing the world with greenery. Everything is new, clean and fresh".

'Ching' means clear, pure or clean and 'Ming' means brightness. As the Spring Season begins, nature is looking bright and clear. Ching Ming is also a Chinese rite that is focused on ancestor worship. On this day, celebrants traditionally visit their ancestral graves, where special rites are held and offerings are made in honor of their departed beloved ones.

Ching Ming or Grave-Sweeping Day is held on the 106th day after winter solstice, and occurring around April 5 of the Gregorian calendar. It is traditionally an important festival day for the Chinese throughout the world.

On Sunday, April 2, members of The Vancouver Yee Fung Toy Society and their relatives drove to the Mountainview Cemetery Chinese Pavilion for a ceremony at noon, coincidentally the Day-light Saving Time occurred on the same day. Therefore we set our time an hour ahead before we went to bed the night before, to ensure that we will all get up on time to attend this day¡¦s event. In Attendance at this year¡¦s ceremony were Canada YFT Chairman Kan and his wife, advisor Gary and his wife, Vancouver YFT Chairman Jim and his wife, Vice Chairman James, Vice Chairman Phillip, Advisors Dick and his wife, Advisor Wayne, Secretary Wing and his wife, Directors Steven, Benita, Sui Ji and his wife, David, George and his wife, Kin Man and Treasurer Martin, and relatives altogether totaling over thirty people.

They came with the roast pork, pastries, wine, and fruits and arranged them on the ceremonial altar. We all listened attentively to Director Steven Yee¡¦s ceremony proceedings. Director George Yee set off the firecrackers at the end of the ceremony to scare off evil spirits and to alert the deceased relatives that we are there to pay our respects.

The weather also cooperated that day. Unlike last year, the daybreak drizzle had transformed into a clear noon sky. We all enjoyed this spring day¡¦s warmth.

After the ceremonial ritual, our YFT members and relatives drove to our Society Hall in Chinatown to share a delicious buffet lunch together.

Vancouver holds Annual General Meeting

The Vancouver YFT Society held its first ever Annual General Meeting for the members on April 2, 2006, immediately after the Ching Ming buffet luncheon at the Chinatown Society Hall.

The members signed in before the lunch was served, after every member sat on their seats arranged by Lun Zhan in the Hall, Chairman Jim called the meeting to order, he told the audience that this meeting was the first ever meeting, hence no previous minutes were available on record yet.

Chairman Jim then proceeded with his report of the activities of the past year, followed by the financial report read by the current treasurer Martin. Chairman Jim asked the members if the financial report be formally adopted and carried, motion was to adopt and carried.

An important business on the meeting agenda was to read out the Constitution of the Vancouver YFT chapter to the members, Secretary Wing read out the Vancouver Constitution in detail, motion on the floor was to approved as read, Director Steven asked the Chairman to add a few more vice chairman next time to the Scholarship committee. Currently the constitution stated one Vice Chairman only. Everyone agreed.

After other orders of business were brought up, discussions were held; the motion to adjourn the meeting was later seconded and carried. Secretary Wing recorded the meeting¡¦s minutes.

Stop the presses, call the news!
There's something big in our Vancouver City!
It's so cool, it's really nifty!
Dick and Georgina...are fifty!

A couple celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary certainly deserves to celebrate. They have managed to survive a half century of life's ups and downs together. Not many people make it through the first five years, let alone ten times that number.

Well, Vancouver YFT Advisor Dick Yee and his wife Georgina Yee have managed that, and both were celebrating their golden wedding anniversary at the Pink Pearl Seafood Restaurant with their family and friends on May 7, 2006.

Every wedding anniversary is indeed a special time for a couple. This is when they look back on their relationship and refresh their recollection of their happy years together. Son Selwyn and his wife Sandy, daughter Sylvia and her husband William Chow, daughter Sophia, grandsons Christopher Yee, Cameron Yee, Daryle Chow and Derrick Chow joined in the celebration of this happy occasion.

James Yu served as the evening emcee; he made a very wonderful speech and a very beautiful tribute to Dick and Georgina. Simultaneously video and photos of Dick and Georgina¡¦s everyday life was unfolded onto the screen.

In his congratulatory speech, the Yee Fung Toy Society of Canada Chairman Mr. Kan Yu praised the Golden Wedding Anniversary couple and wished them happiness in the future.

The evening's music entertainment began with the couple singing ¡§Gau Shan Ching¡¨ (The Ode of Green High Mountain) for us, followed by a series of karaoke songs sung by the guests.

Dick and Georgina, Happy 50th Anniversary!

Thanks for sharing your joys with us!

Paul Yee with Saltwater City: The Story of Vancouver¡¦s Chinese Community

CBC Radio One, The Georgia Straight, The Vancouver Readers & Writers Festival, The Vancouver Public Library, and explorASIAN presented Paul Yee with Saltwater City on May 17, 2006.

Both Jim Yee and Martin Yee went to the CBC Studio to celebrate the completely redesigned and revised edition of this best-selling landmark book, first published in 1988, which told the epic story of Vancouver's Chinese community and its extraordinary growth from marginal to centre stage in a new world order. The new edition includes the years 1987 to 2001, when Vancouver¡¦s Chinese population grew rapidly.

The text resonates with often painful first-person recollections and includes 200 photographs, most reproduced for the first time, to form a chronological portrait of the community from its earliest beginnings to the present. With the assimilation of its people into the mainstream of Canadian life following World War II, Saltwater City, as early Chinese immigrants called the community, was threatened, but changes in attitude, government policy, and the opening of diplomatic relations with China instead caused a renaissance. Now, Vancouver's Chinese community enjoys considerable political and financial influence and has matured beyond recognition into one of Canada's most successful ethnic enclaves.

Paul Yee, a third-generation Chinese-Canadian, was born in Saskatchewan, grew up in Vancouver¡¦s Chinatown, and worked for the Vancouver City Archives before moving to Toronto in 1988. He has written several fiction, non-fiction, children¡¦s and young adult books.  A well-known historian and community activist, he is the author of numerous award winning books including Saltwater City, Tales of Gold Mountain and Roses Sing on New Snow. Most recently, Yee was named the 1996 Governor General's Award Winner for Children's Literature for his latest book, Ghost Train. His latest books include Bamboo, Chinatowns in Canada, and Is This Screwed, Or What?
