Incorporated Management Committee

Elegantia College recently applied to the Education and Manpower Bureau (EMB) to set up the Incorporated Management Committee to manage our own school affairs, and got the approval from the Permanent Secretary for Education and Manpower (PSEM), in August, 2005. Thus Elegantia College became one of Hong Kong¡¦s first schools to be managed by the IMC. At the same time, the school has the authorization in formulating education policies of the school in accordance with the vision and mission set by the sponsoring body; planning and managing financial and human resources available to the school. Therefore, we are pleased to share our experience of this establishment process with you.

School-based After-school Learning and Support Programmes

Our school also applied for the cash grant for the School-based After-school Learning and Support Programmes and got the approval in July, 2005. The school received the funding of $264,000 from the PSEM. This program commenced in August of this year, with the activity slogan ¡§Enhancement of students' self-concept through developing their potentials¡¨. With two major concepts in mind:

  1. To develop a student's learning capability and to promote a student's discipline level (English, mathematics);
  2. To provide comprehensive development programs for students, for example, interpersonal skills, creativity, physical skills, etc.

Study groups in the Mainland and Abroad

So far this year our school organized three groups to study away from home; the objective was to broaden students' horizons as well as provide in depth studies of the Chinese or western culture, including:

  1. Guizhou (Guiyang, Anshun) ― our cultural exchange group expenses were subsidized by the Permanent Secretary for Education and Manpower "Understanding Our Motherland Program" plan.
  2. Yunnan (Lijiang, Dali) ― the national minority cultural study group, subsidized by the Youth Office [Social Welfare Department].
  3. Australia (Brisbane, Gold Coast) ― the group studies English away from home; the school funded the cost of travel insurance.

Effective Studying Tools

In order to motivate our students to study on their own initiatives, and study furthermore outside of their school, we provide the following effective studying tools to them:

  1. Greater China¡¦s on-line news provider (Wisenews) ― the student are able to access the net to search for news information on Hong Kong, China and the rest of the world, ICAC Moral Education Web, the ICAC Education Unit produces moral education materials for use by teachers in schools, ranging from kindergartens to universities. As the population in Hong Kong is predominantly Chinese, these materials are produced in Chinese.
  2. Knowledge Forum/Community network ― Knowledge Community allows our students and teachers to collaborate internationally with students and teachers from other schools/countries to Solve Problems, Construct Knowledge, Explore Idea and Build Project.
  3. Multimedia language study network (Discovery Online) ― student in accordance to their individual progress by studying English on-line.
  4. Scholastic Book Club plan ― the student are invited to join the Scholastic Book Club, paying a preferential price for subscribing high quality English reading books, and to exchange the books among themselves after reading them, hence by further reading they will gain more knowledge.

Recent Visits by the Media

  1. Our school was invited to participate in the filming of HK ATV¡¦s program series of "New Thoughts of Teaching" part-four sponsored by the PSEM, the subject was "Promoting the moral and civil education in schools ¡V The basis of education of mankind will cultivate their virtues", introduces our school in the moral education and the civil education experience aspect. This program was televised on November 26 (Sunday) at 7 PM on Hong Kong ATV.
  2. Ming Pao Daily will publish at the end of November a "2006-2007 High Schools Selection Guide", introducing some of the high schools preferred by parents, our school being one. This guide describes characteristics of each school with strong emphasis on our adaptation and arrangement for the students and so on.
  3. Ming Pao Daily on September 20 reported this school joined the Knowledge Community development network, expanding the education and knowledge system.
